Wole Oguntokun stages play based on kidnapped girls' story

Publish date: 2024-07-09

The stage production will feature the likes of 2015 AMVCA Best Actress, Kehinde Bankole, Leelee Byoma, Meg Otanwa, Rotimi Fakunle and Joshua Alabi alongside the Renegade Theatre Ensemble.

According to Oguntokun, there aren’t many artistes talking about the very uncomfortable issue of the continuing abduction of girls in the North East.

Hence, the need to stage the production.

According to the Guardian, the production centres on actual conversations with some of the girls that escaped the clutches of Boko Haram.

It also takes from interviews with people directly affected by the incessant presence of the marauders, disclosures by aid workers and parents of still-missing adolescents.

Furthermore, the play centres not just around the infamous Chibok abduction, but also tracks the events leading to that level of lawlessness in the region and the aftermath of the incident.

Renegade Theatre is no stranger to social commentary as it had previously staged a satire of the late military leader, General Sanni Abacha, in Who’s Afraid of Wole Soyinka? and done a scathing lampoon of Third Republic politicians with The Sound and the Fury.

The performance which compels us to look at abduction, forced marriages, corruption in Internally Displaced People’s camps amongst other issues  aims to highlight the continued violations of many of the fundamental human rights of females in the country.

It will also shed light on sex trade human trafficking while helping to start conversations on the adequacy of the measures being taken in the country to prevent violence towards young people.
